In the new social trend of "going green" and being environmentally conscience, many cities strive to cut their carbon emissions. While cutting carbon emissions is a step in the right direction, it does not result in a net positive effect on the environment. This realization is the basis for the Carbon Positive City initiative. As we now know through new research, carbon in the soil is an asset, while carbon in the atmosphere is a liability. Of course, cities must reduce carbon in the atmosphere, but they must also increase carbon in the soil. In this manner, cities may not only be less bad, but also more good.
Green Dragon Lake Project
The Green Dragon Lake Project is a suburban development project southwest of central Beijing near the terminus of subway line 14. The development comprises of 121.3 sq km and is situated on the scenic Green Dragon Lake in the lush mountains of western Beijing. After completion, we expect 108,800 residents within the built-up area with a population density of 300/hectare. The new development when completed will be a prime example for green and smart urban planning with full compliance with the Green Guidelines and Smart Guidelines. In addition to green and smart, Green Dragon Lake will become the pilot model for the Carbon Positive City, exploring the ways cities can further synergize with their natural envirnoment. The Green Dragon Lake Project is planned and developed by architectural firm William McDonough + Partners with GGDC as their project manager and funding from CDB Capital.
